I’ve been seeing some concerning posts about the negative long term effects from taking statins. Yet others claim they’re game changers with minimal side effects.

Can others offer their insights?

I have very high cholesterol that did not budge with exercising and dietary changes. I have had a hard time with stations but have been on one for a year. My numbers improved quite a bit.

What are the negative long term side effects?

My brothers were put on statins and like clockwork when I hit their age then, my doctor also suggested it.

Define long term.20 years? 40 years?

Statins have been around for decades and are well-studied and generally well tolerated with positive results. Now if you start taking them in your 30s or 40s, that might mean you are on them twice as long as the typical person and the studies may not reflect your experience. if you are 75 ( and I don’t think you are FF), then well even long term issues may not be a problem compared to the immediate benefits.

It seems to me you need to evaluate your options- including dietary changes, exercise, and other options - and look at your options. I’ve been on them for about a year, and my numbers are great now (i was just above the threshhold) and I’ve had no problems. A former boss whose cholesterol was in the 300s retired early, ate oatmeal ever day, and took a low does statin. Doing great 15 years later, and outlived his dad by nearly 20 years. 🤷‍♀️

glad you are looking at options- always a good idea.

I don’t know about long term effects, but I tried Lipitor, Crestor and now pravastatin. The pravastatin at a low dose is the only one that didn’t make me feel like I had a lobotomy.
